List of projects selected after the 3rd Call for Proposals

The third call for proposals of the Foundation generated once again a considerable interest from conservation organisations around the world. We received project proposals from 49 different countries. We would like to thank all the organizations that submitted a project. However, a selection had to be made and, after careful analysis, we selected 23 projects to be implemented in 14 countries, targeting a total of 183 globally threatened tree species, including 30 Critically Endangered, 65 Endangered and 88 Vulnerable. They are listed below:

LATN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEANS

1. Universidad del Rosario (Colombia): In situ conservation of threatened trees of Colombia Special focus on endemic and endangered species of Fagaceae and Juglandaceae (2021-2024).

2. Mindo Cloudforest Foundation (Ecuador): Prioritized Forest Conservation and Restoration Corridors in the Choco-Andean Foothills of NW Ecuador with Improved Nursery and Field Management in Benefit of Fourteen Red List Species and Seven Tree Species Potentially New to Science (2021-2024).

3. Corporación SalvaMontes with Fundación South Pole (Colombia): Recovery of the populations of 3 threatened Magnolia species (Magnolia guatapensis, M. polyhypsophylla and M. yarumalensis) in the “Alto de Ventanas” region, through a population restoration program, in situ conservation actions and outreach actions with local and international communities (2021-2024).

4. Wildlife Conservation Society (Colombia): Conservation and restoration of Colombian walnut (Juglans neotropica) and other native threatened tree species from Andean-forests (2021-2024).

5. Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos Alexander von Humboldt (Colombia): Promoting community engagement to secure the conservation of endemic tree species in a highly biodiverse region of Colombia (2021-2023).

6. Nature and Culture International (Peru): Conservation of endemic and critically endangered tree and shrub species of the Dry Forests of Marañón in Peru through seed collection, nursery propagation and reforestation inside and outside protected areas (2021-2024).

7. Charles Darwin Foundation (Galapagos): Prevention of the extinction of Scalesia cordata through reinforcement planting and control of invasive species on Isabela in the Galapagos Islands (2021-2024).

8. Fundación Aliados (Ecuador): Conservation of the Eastern-Andes Cloud Forest in Ecuador through the restoration of populations of five threatened tree species (2021-2023).

9. Fundación Jardín Botánico “Guillermo Piñeres” (Colombia): Strengthening the population of threatened tree species in the Colombian Caribbean region through propagation and population reinforcement actions to improve the population status of at least seven threatened native tree species (2021-2023).

10. Asociación Civil Propatagonia (Argentina): Intercultural and intersectoral partnership approach to address Araucaria araucana threats to achieve the recovery of the Araucaria Forest affected by wildfires and to increase the protection of high conservation value species in protected areas and buffer zones within mapuche indigenous territories (2021-2024).


AFRICA

11. Reforest Africa (Tanzania): Initiating long-term forest restoration for nature and people in the Udzungwa-Kilombero biodiversity hotspot by establishing infrastructure, building capacity and improving strategies for forest restoration (2021-2024).

12. Botanic Gardens Conservation International – Africa Ltd. (Kenya): Ensuring that threatened tree species are a core component of tree planting programmes in Kenya, resulting in enhanced in situ conservation for more 30 threatened tree species (2021-2023).

13. Technical Support Office for Socio-Environmental Resilience in Central Africa BETA-Résilience (Cameroon): Support for the natural regeneration and revitalization of forests stands in the commune of Bengbis (2021-2024).

14. SEED Madagascar (Madagascar): Conservation action in Sainte Luce in southeast Madagascar to improve the long-term viability of the populations of six threatened palm species within three protected areas (2021-2024).

15. L’Homme et l’environnement (Madagascar): In situ conservation of 2 critically endangered palm species, 3 threatened and vulnerable palm species and 23 other threatened species in the mid-altitude tropical rainforest of Vohimana in Madagascar (2021-2023).

16. Plant Conservation Action group (Seychelles): Developing an ecological restoration society on Mahé (Seychelles) based on two sites dedicated to in situ conservation of six Critically Endangered endemic tree species (2021-2024).

17. Seychelles Islands Foundation (Seychelles): Increasing resilience of Seychelles’ keystone species coco de mer (Lodoicea maldivica), through scientific research while mitigating threats of forest fires and poaching (2021-2023).


EUROPE

18. Republic institute for the protection of cultural, historical and natural heritage (Serbie): Support in situ restoration and conservation of the oldest European tree species, the Serbian spruce (Picea omorika (Panč.) Purkinye) through the creation of guidelines for conservation management (2021-2024).


ASIA

19. Tarbiat Modares University and University of Fribourg (Iran): In situ conservation and protection of the most threatened endemic tree species of Iran and improvement of the knowledge of threatened woody species of the Hyrcanian Forest (2021-2024).

20. Restorasi Ekosistem Indonesia – REKI (Indonésie): Increasing the populations of 10 globally threatened species including 8 Dipterocarps species in Hutan Harapan (Indonesia) by better species protection, habitat restoration and improvement of the resin value chain (2021-2024).

21. Dilmah Conservation (Sri Lanka): Conservation of 13 threatened rainforest tree species in Southwestern Sri Lanka through corridor landscape restoration, capacity building, and policy influencing at the local level (2021-2024).

22. Keystone Foundation (India): Strengthening integrated (in situ and ex situ) conservation actions for selected endangered native tree species of the Western Ghats through enhanced ecological restoration, monitoring and protection efforts (2021-2024).

23. Cambridge Conservation Initiative and the University of Cambridge (Indonesia): Mapping of Endangered Tree Species using Drones to Improve Conservation Management Outcomes (2021-2024).
