List of projects selected by Fondation Franklinia after its 2nd Call for Proposals

The second call for proposals of the Foundation generated even more interest than the first and the quality of the proposals received was much higher. Many organizations submitted very good projects targeting a total of 277 threatened tree species, including 50 Critically Endangered (CR), 109 Endangered (EN) and 118 Vulnerable (VU), in 59 different countries. We would like to thank all the organizations who submitted a project.

However, a selection had to be made and, after careful analysis, we selected 25 projects to be implemented in 22 countries. They are listed below:

LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

1. Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (Jamaica): Improved conservation of 6 threatened trees and their cloud and rainforest habitat in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park and World Heritage Site (2020 – 2023).

2. Grupo de Ecología y Conservación de Islas, A.C. (Mexico): Preservation of three endemic threatened tree species, Pinus radiata (EN), Cupressus guadalupensis (EN) and Quercus tomentella (EN), on Guadalupe Island in Mexico (2020-2023).

3. Medellin Botanic Garden (Colombia): Facilitating conservation of four threatened palms and magnolias of the Andes by establishing and implementing recovery strategies at the species level and engaging local communities in conservation actions (2020 – 2022).

4. Jocotoco Conservation Fund(Ecuador): Permanent protection of four highly threatened tree species from the Chocó, Magnolia canandeana (CR), Magnolia dixonii (CR), Ecuadendron acosta-solisianum (EN) and Matisia palenquiana (EN), and increase to their population sizes through targeted conservation activities (2020 – 2023).

5. Ecological Reserve of Guapiaçu – Regua (Brazil): Adding tree diversity to REGUA’s restoration programme (2020 – 2022).

6. Botanic Garden of the City of Buenos Aires “Carlos Thays” (Argentina): Propagation and planting of threatened piedmont forest trees in Northern Argentina to restore a degraded area of piedmont jungle, within the cloud forest in the Natural Reserve of Horco Molle in Tucumán (2020 – 2023).

7. Island Conservation and Oikonos (Chile): Preventing the extinction of threatened endemic tree species in the biodiverse Juan Fernandez Archipelago and improving their conservation status (2020 – 2023).

8. Fundaeco – FundaciónPara el Ecodesarrollo y la Conservación (Guatemala): Conservation of endemic and threatened species of Trees and Palms in the Caribbean Guatemala Slope Key Biodiversity Area (2020 – 2022).

9. Grupo Jaragua (Dominican Republic): Saving three endangered trees from subtropical dry forests of Hispaniola (Ekmanianthe longiflora, Pseudophoenix ekmanii and Pimenta haitiensis) (2020 – 2023).


AFRICA

10. Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew (Guinea): Improving the in situ conservation status of all 27 globally threatened (CR and EN) tree species in Guinea, by focusing on 13 target tree species which occur in three Tropical Important Plant Areas (TIPAs) in Guinea (2020 – 2023).

11. IRAD – Herbier National du Cameroun (Cameroon): Conservation of Microberlinia bisulcata, a Critically Endangered (CR) species endemic to Cameroon (2020 – 2023)

12. Adigrat University (Ethiopia): Stakeholders-based conservation interventions for the Endangered Dracaena ombet tree and its degraded habitat in Ethiopia (2020 – 2022).

13. Kenya Forestry Research Institute (Kenya): Promoting long-term conservation of two Endangered tree species, Coffea fadenii (EN) and Afrocarpus usambarensis (EN), in the Eastern Arc Mountains forests of Taita Hills in Kenya (2020 – 2023).

14. Ecosystem Restoration Alliance Indian Ocean (Mauritius): Mitigating the major threats to threatened endemic tree species by restoration of highly threatened forest ecosystems in Mauritius (2020 – 2023).

15. Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust (Mauritius): Saving the Round Island hurricane palm by increasing population numbers and restoring lowland dry palm forest in Mauritius (2020 – 2023).

16. Ebony Forest Ltd (Mauritius): Forest restoration and conservation of 30 threatened tree species by controlling invasive alien plants in Mauritius (2020 – 2023).

17. Missouri Botanical Garden (Madagascar): Conservation of prized threatened timber tree species in restoration zones within three Malagasy protected areas (2020 – 2023).

18. Association TSIMOKA (Madagascar): Saving the remaining populations of Delonix velutina (EN) in the protected area of Oronjia by balancing the supply and demand for this wood (2020 – 2023).


ASIA

19. Armenian Society of Biologists (Armenia): Protection of threatened wild pear species and securing viability of their populations in Armenia (2020 – 2023).

20. Nature Conservation Foundation (India): Protection, propagation, and reinforcement planting of 10 globally threatened rainforest tree species to enhance their in situ conservation in the Anamalai Hills, Western Ghats, India (2020 – 2023).

21. University of Copenhagen (Cambodia): “Save the Resin Trees, Save the Forest”: Implementing a Dipterocarpaceae species-focused strategy to save the Prey Lang forest landscape in Cambodia (2020 – 2022).

22. Bidoup Nui Ba National Park (Vietnam): Mapping of three endemic and Critically Endangered (CR) wild Camellias in Lam Dong province and conservation through propagating and replanting into Bidoup Nui Ba National Park (2020 – 2023).

23. Borneo Nature Foundation (Indonesia): Protecting Borneo’s peat-swamp forests and their biodiversity by preventing wildfires and restoring habitat (2020 – 2022).


PACIFIC

24. Société d’Ornithologie de Polynésie (French Polynesia): Conservation of threatened tree species in the high plains of Mount Tahiti in French Polynesia. (2020 – 2023).

25. Belau National Museum (Palau): Conservation of the threatened tree Parkia parvifoliola (Fabaceae) and assessment of Critically Endangered species in Palau (2020 – 2022).

The location of all the field projects we support is shown on the map below. Some of them are funded indirectly through the Global Trees Campaign (https://globaltrees.org/).
