Conservation of threatened tree species in Jamaica

Improved conservation of 6 threatened trees and their cloud and rainforest habitat in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park and World Heritage Site, Jamaica

Partner: Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT)
Years: 2020-2023

This project aims at improving the conservation of 6 threatened tree species and their rain and cloud forest habitat inside the John Crow Mountains National Park and World Heritage Site, as well as reducing encroachment into 2 areas of concern by increasing patrol frequency and awareness raising activities.

Endemic threatened Podocarpus urbanii (CR) and endemic moss Phyllogonium fulgens

This project will improve the conservation of at least 6 threatened tree species and their rain and cloud forest habitat in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park and World Heritage Site. The Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT) will partner with researchers from the University of the West Indies to conduct field research and conservation actions working closely with National Park Rangers and local community members to develop protocols for forest restoration (phenology, germination, propagation and growth) using native, endemic and threatened tree species.

The project aims also at reducing encroachment in the National Park especially in two areas of concern by increasing patrols and increasing local understanding about the importance of threatened and native trees species and their conservation through outreach and training activities.
