Pericopsis elata, Ghana

The African Teak has been a target of unsustainable exploitation since the second half of the 20th century due to its incredible timber properties and pushed to the brink of extinction in Ghana. This project will pave the path to ensure its sustainable use in Ghana through enrichment planting and targeted conservation education and awareness raising activities.

The overall goal of this project is to improve the conservation status, and ensure the long-term sustainable use of the endangered African teak, Pericopsis elata, in Ghana. More specifically, this project aims at increasing the population of the species through enrichment planting. The project will generate also much needed data on the species phenology and ecology to underpin conservation management decisions. Finally INEC will implement as well targeted conservation education and awareness raising programmes on the plight and conservation status of the species to inspire positive behaviour change within the civil society. Farmers are fully integrated into these conservation efforts and will be trained to undertake Pericopsis elata plantations on their own land.
