Years: 2024-2027

Proyecto Almanegra addresses an important part of the Conservation Action Plan for Colombian Threatened Trees with direct conservation action for 32 of the 100 most important CR and EN tree species in Colombia. It will also protect 18,933 hectares located in 13 reserves centred in the most important hotspots for the conservation of threatened tree species, notably Magnolias.

Colombia has one of the greatest diversities of vascular plants including over 6,000 tree species of which 20% are endemic. Of the 1,118 endemic tree species, 37% are considered threatened with extinction primarily from habitat loss. For the past 25 years, Fundación ProAves vision has been to implement conservation actions that ensure the survival of the most threatened birds and biodiversity in Colombia. A major part of that vision has been the establishment of a growing network of 27 nature reserves.
Proyecto Almanegra is a collaboration between the Colombian NGO Fundacion ProAves and US NGO Women for Conservation. This partnership aims to permanently protect 18,933 hectares of forests in 13 nature reserves that are critical for the most threatened tree species. 720 hectares of priority private properties will be purchased and protected for threatened trees, while project partners will reforest 3,497 hectares of degraded lands, using 16,000 seedlings of the 32 most threatened tree species following training and providing employment for 65 women and 13 Rangers.
