13 May Protection of threatened conifer populations in Vietnam
Protection and restoration of threatened conifer populations in Van Ho District, Son La Province, Vietnam
Partner: People and Nature Reconciliation (PanNature)
Years: 2024-2027
This conifer protection and restoration project builds on and scales up years of PanNature’s conifer conservation work in Van Ho. It includes an active participation in the conservation activities of the local communities, alleviating threats to the remaining conifer populations in the area and promoting in-situ population recovery and long-term natural regeneration.
The project aims to protect and restore threatened conifer populations in Van Ho district, Son La province in Vietnam, by organizing forest protection and management while promoting in-situ regeneration.
The Critically Endangered endemic species Pinus cernua and the Endangered species Cunninghamia kosnishii in Xuan Nha Nature Reserve will be protected through the formation of a collaboration mechanism between local stakeholders for conservation work and promotion of natural regeneration.
Two Endangered species Calocedrus rupestris and Taxus chinensis on the limestone mountain range in Van Ho district will be protected through the establishment of a community conservation area (CCA) and regenerated by planting rooted cuttings.
The long term objective is that populations of these four threatened conifer trees in Van Ho are protected and have a stable natural regeneration capacity in their natural habitats.
