Protection and Restoration of Threatened Trees of the Dakatcha Woodland in Kenya

Partner: A Rocha Kenya
Years: 2024-2027

Since 1999, A Rocha Kenya has worked closely with communities, local authorities and other conservation organisations to restore threatened habitats and protect threatened species along the Kenyan coast. Witnessing the rapid destruction of the Dakatcha Woodland, A Rocha Kenya started an ambitious conservation programme in 2014, which, guided by its biodiversity surveys and community work, is establishing a nature reserve so that the landscape maintains some of its ecological integrity.

A Rocha Kenya is part of the international network of A Rocha organizations present in 20 countries around the world. A Rocha Kenya’s mission is to conserve and restore threatened habitats and biodiversity through research, environmental action, advocacy and community empowerment.
To date, it is the protection of threatened and endemic vertebrates of the Dakatcha Woodland which has directed the organisation’s conservation strategy; however, through this project the protection of threatened tree species will in turn be integrated into this strategy, thereby delivering a more complete conservation outcome for the landscape.
Together with Centre for Ecosystem Restoration-Kenya (CER-K) and A Rocha International, the project’s five objectives are to (i) map the distribution of threatened trees, (ii) develop key environmental education messages for the communities, (iii) undertake phenology studies, (iv) initiate tree protection and restoration activities and (v) build the organisation’s tree conservation capacity.
