01 Apr Protecting and restoring the Mata Atlântica forest in Brazil
Conservation and Restoration of Native Threatened and Rare Tree Species from Semideciduous Atlantic Forest in Brazil
Partenaire: FREPESP – Federação das Reservas Ecológicas do Estado de São Paulo – Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPN en portugais)
Période: 2020-2022
This project will prevent the extinction and promote the conservation of three globally threatened tree species, Dalbergia nigra (VU), Cariniana legalis (VU) and Cedrela odorata (VU) that grow in the Semideciduous Atlantic Forest of the state of São Paulo, Brazil.
2’500 trees of the target species will be planted on 180 hectares of protected areas. These threatened native species will be conserved in situ and incorporated into restoration programs. The project will maximize the technical capacity for the restoration practitioners. Workshops will be carried out to increase and to understand the importance of species richness in restoration programs and the effective measures needed for long-term conservation actions for threatened and rare tree species.
