29 Jan List of new projects selected for funding (July 2024 – January 2025)
Twenty six new projects were signed since July 2024.
A majority were selected following the two calls for proposals launched in 2024 focused on Colombia and Eastern Africa. In parallel, the Foundation renewed its support to some existing projects to consolidate the activities and increase their impact.
The new projects selected for funding are listed below:
COLOMBIA
• Asociación Colombiana de Botánica : Conservation of 7 threatened Magnolia species in Colombia’s Eastern Cordillera (2024-2027).
• Corporación San Jorge : Conservation of 6 endemic Endangered tree species in the upper basin of the Magdalena River in Colombia (2024-2027).
• Fundación ProAves: Proyecto Almanegra: Saving Critically Endangered Magnolias across Colombia (2024-2027).
• Fundación Impulso Verde Kuaspue : Safeguarding 8 Endangered tree species in the premontane and high-Andean tropical forests ecosystems of the Nariño department (2024-2027).
• New York Botanical Garden: Conserving threatened leguminous rain forest trees in the Middle Magdalena Valley of Colombia – Filling critical gaps in taxonomic knowledge (2025-2026).
• Jardín Botánico de Medellín: Species-Specific Recovery Strategies for the 10 most threatened tree species of the Antioquia’s Andes in Colombia- Phase II (2025-2028).
• Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) : Conservation and restoration of Colombian Walnut (Juglans neotropica) and other native threatened tree species from Andean Forests – Phase II (2025-2027).
KENYA
• Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI):
o Consolidating long-term conservation efforts for threatened tree species in the Eastern Arc Mountains forests of Taita Hills, Kenya (2024-2027).
o Enhancing participatory conservation strategies for the protection of threatened tree species in the Aberdare mountain ranges (2024-2027).
• The Little Environmental Action Foundation (The LEAF Charity) : Conservation of the threatened trees of Chasimba and Pangani Limestone outcrop in Kilifi county, Kenya (2025-2027).
• The International Tree Foundation (ITF) : Upscaling the mainstreaming of threatened species into ITF’s restoration programmes in Kenya’s water towers (2024-2027).
• National Museums of Kenya: Using integrative approaches in conservation of threatened Cola species in the coastal forests of Kilifi county, Kenya (2025-2027).
• On a mission: Kakamega Forest National Reserve Community Restoration Project (2025-2027).
• A Rocha Kenya: Protection and Restoration of Threatened Trees of the Dakatcha Woodland (2025-2027).
TANZANIA
• Reforest Africa: Forest Landscape Restoration and Conservation of Two Forest Reserves Across the Udzungwa-Kilombero Biodiversity Hotspot in Tanzania (2025-2027).
ETHIOPIA
• Adigrat University: Conservation and restoration of the Endangered Dracaena ombet tree species in the relic Desa’a dry Afromontane forest of northern Ethiopia – Phase II (2025-2028).
• Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute : Restoration and Conservation of Threatened and Endemic Fabaceae Species in Ethiopia (2025-2027).
CAMEROON
• BETA-Résilience: Conservation of a 22 ha community forest, support for individual reforestation initiatives and initiation of beekeeping value chain in Bengbis in Cameroon – Phase II (2024-2027).
GUINEA
• Royal Botanic Gardens Kew: Community conservation of threatened trees in forested Important Plant Areas of Guinea – Phase II (2024-2027).
MADAGASCAR
• Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG): Securing threatened tree populations at Analalava forest in Madagascar (2025-2027).
INDONESIA
• Restoration Ecosystem Indonesia (PT REKI): EExpanding restoration efforts for Dipterocarps and other threatened native plant species in Hutan Harapan in Indonesia – Phase II (2024-2027).
CAMBODIA
• Wildlife Alliance: Restoring 1,000 Hectares in the Cardamom Mountain Rainforest (2024-2028).
• Conservation International (CI): Restoring Cambodia’s threatened flooded forest trees (2025-2027).
ECUADOR
• Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF): Saving the endemic Scalesia cordata (EN) from imminent extinction in Galapagos – Phase II (2024-2027).
GLOBAL
• Botanic Garden Conservation International (BGCI): Global Trees: Action for all tree species – Tree Conservation Action Project (2025-2027).
• Zoological Society of London (ZSL): ZSL EDGE multiyear support, 10 fellows (2025-2029).
