List of new projects selected for funding in 2025

Forty-four new projects were signed in 2025.

A majority were selected following a call for proposals launched early 2025 focused on Latin America and the Caribbean. In parallel, the Foundation renewed its support to some existing projects to consolidate the activities and increase their impact.

The 44 new projects selected for funding are listed below:

Puerto Rico

• Atlanta Botanical Garden: Strengthening Montane Forests conservation in Puerto Rico through local actions and partnerships (2025-2028)


Haïti

• Haiti National Trust: Conserving the threatened tree flora of Grand Bois National Park in Haiti (2026-2028)


Cuba

• Planta! – Plantlife Conservation Society: Saving Cuban most threatened trees – Phase II (2026-2028)


Costa Rica

• Osa Conservation: Scaling rare and endemic tree conservation in the AmistOsa region in Costa Rica – Phase III (2025-2028)

• Agathos Costa Rica: Guardians of the Trees – Conservation of threatened tree species and ecological restoration in the Paso de las Nubes biological corridor in Costa Rica (2025-2028)


Guatemala

• Asociación Vivamos Mejor Guatemala: Long-term conservation of seven threatened tree species in the Zunil-Atitlán-Balam Juyú biocultural and sustainable development corridor of the western volcanic chain of Guatemala (2025-2028)


El Salvador

• Universidad de El Salvador: Enhance the conservation status of Quercus vicentensis, Quercus acutifolia, Quercus insignis and other oaks populations in El Salvador (2026-2028)

• Protección de la Fauna Mexicana A.C.: Conservation of endangered forests in the influence zone of Sierra de Zapalinamé State Natural Reserve – Phase II (2025-2028)

• International Community Foundation & Union de Conservacion Agua de la Sierra: Supporting the integrated conservation of threatened trees in Baja California Sur in Mexico (2025-2028)

• Vallarta Botanical Gardens A. C.: Community-based conservation of Critically Endangered tree species of Los Horcones River Basin in Mexico (2025-2028)

• EIZIA: In situ conservation of endangered tree species at the southern border of Mexico (2026-2028)

• Pronatura Sur: Rescuing threatened trees that are key to biodiversity and forest landscape restoration in Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico (2025-2028)


Colombia

• Jardín Botánico de Medellín : Species-Specific Recovery Strategies for the 10 most threatened tree species of the Antioquia’s Andes in Colombia- Phase II (2025-2028)

• Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS): Conservation and restoration of Colombian Walnut (Juglans neotropica) and other native threatened tree species from Andean Forests – Phase II (2025-2027)

• IUCN SSC Colombian Plant Specialist Group: Colombia Threatened Tree Conservation Action Plan – Catalyzing coordination and implementation (2026-2028)


Ecuador

• Fundación para la Conservación de los Andes Tropicales: Restoring forests, reviving threatened species in the Ecuadorian Chocó: Science-based reforestation and community conservation – Phase II (2025-2028)

• Fundación de Conservación Jocotoco: Conservation and restoration of 10 threatened tree species in the botanically rich Podocarpus-El Cóndor region in Ecuador (2025-2028)

• Fundación Aves y Conservación: Bringing back threatened tree species into the Choco-Andean Forests of four Key Biodiversity Areas in Ecuador (2025-2028)

• Third millennium Alliance: Saving the last known population of Haught’s Orchid Tree (Bauhinia haughtii) and associated threatened species in a high endemism hotspot of the Pacific Forest of Ecuador (2025-2028)


Bolivia

• Missouri Botanical Garden: Community-based conservation strategy to safeguard Bolivia’s most threatened tree species through ecological restoration (2026-2029)

• Asociación Faunagua: Kewiña (Polylepis) conservation in Bolivia’s Tunari National Park (2026-2028)


Peru

• Wildlife Conservation Society: Communal conservation of threatened Polylepis forests in Puno in Peru (2025-2028)

• Mendel University: Restoration and conservation of threatened trees in Tingo Maria region in Peru (2025-2028)

• New York Botanical Garden: Filling taxonomic gaps and driving conservation for Axinaea and Meriania species in the Peruvian Andes (2026-2028)


Argentina

• Asociación de Amigos de la Patagonia, Consortium Lanin National Park: Long-term conservation of the Araucaria araucana forests in Argentina – Phase II (2025-2028)

• Fundación Proyungas, CONICET, Universidad Nacional de Tucumán, Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Universidad Nacional de Rafaela: Conservation and restoration of threatened subtropical forests of Argentina (2025-2028)

• Fundación Balseiro, Instituto de Biodiversidad y Medio Ambiente (INIBIOMA), Isla Victoria Botanical Garden, Nahuel Huapi National Park: Protect and foster the long-term resilience of Fitzroya cupressoides in Patagonia (2026-2028)


Brazil

• Association Nordesta Reforestation et Education : Planting 160’000 trees, 50% of which are threatened, around Pedra Talhada Reserve in north-eastern Brazil – Phase II (2025-2028)

• Floresta Viva Institute: Enrichment and monitoring of Atlantic Forest’s threatened tree species populations in southern Bahia in Brazil – Phase II (2026-2028)


Chile

• Island Conservation: Proyecto Neriifolia – Holistic conservation of the arboreal treasures of the Juan Fernandez Archipelago in Chile – Phase II (2025-2028)


Thailand/Cambodia

• Freeland: Sustainable Ecosystems, Empowered Communities & Development (SEED), a Thai–Cambodian transboundary threatened tree conservation initiative (2026-2027)

• Conservation International (CI) : Restoring Cambodia’s threatened flooded forest trees (2025-2027)


Ethiopia

• Adigrat University : Conservation and restoration of the Endangered Dracaena ombet tree species in the relic Desa’a dry Afromontane forest of northern Ethiopia – Phase II (2025-2028)

• Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute : Restoration and conservation of threatened and endemic Fabaceae species in Ethiopia (2025-2027)


Tanzania

• Istituto Oikos: Generating resilience through ecological enhancement in Ngezi forest on Pemba Island in Tanzania (2025-2028)

• PAMS Foundation: Seeds of Survival: Nguru Forests and Livelihood Program (2025-2028)

• Missouri Botanical Garden: Enhanced conservation of 57 highly threatened Tanzanian tree species (2025-2028)


St Helena

• St Helena Research Institute: Sustainable evidence-based conservation for St Helena’s Cabbage trees (2026-2027)


Regional

• Morton Arboretum: Conservation and range restoration of ten threatened Fagaceae species in Laos and Vietnam (2025-2027)

• Morton Arboretum: Integrated Conservation of Threatened Tree Species in Mesoamerica (2026-2028)


Global

• Botanic Garden Conservation International (BGCI): Global Trees: Worldwide programme for the conservation of threatened tree species (2025-2027)

• Fauna & Flora : In situ conservation of threatened trees (2025-2028)

• Zoological Society of London (ZSL): ZSL EDGE multiyear support, 10 fellows (2025-2029)

• TRAFFIC International Limited: The IUCN/TRAFFIC Analyses of the tree proposals to amend the CITES Appendices (2025)
