25 Aug Conservation of Critically Endangered species of the Dry Forests of Marañón, Peru
Conservation of endemic and Critically Endangered tree and shrub species of the Dry Forests of Marañón in Peru through seed collection, nursery propagation and reforestation inside and outside protected areas
Partner: Nature and Culture International (NCI)
Years: 2021-2024
This project aims to promote the conservation of endemic and Critically Endangered species of the dry forests of the Marañon River Valley (Parkinsonia peruviana, Cedrela kuelapensis, Esenbeckia cornuta and Piptadenia weberbaueri), as well as two endemic and Endangered shrub species (Caesalpinia celendiniana and Mimosa lamolina) through seed collection, nursery propagation and reforestation inside and outside protected areas.
This project seeks to improve the conditions of in-situ conservation of endemic tree species in critical danger of extinction (Parkinsonia peruviana, Cedrela kuelapensis, Esenbeckia cornuta and Piptadenia weberbaueri), as well as two shrub species (Caesalpinia celendiniana and Mimosa lamolina) which are also endemic and Endangered, through seed collection, propagation and reforestation.
The final aim of the project is to increase their populations and presence in the territory. To ensure the sustainability of the project’s achievements over time, reforestation will be done inside and outside natural protected areas, and outside the areas of potential impacts of the planned hydroelectric dams in the Marañon river.
