Conservation of endemic and threatened species of Trees and Palms in the Caribbean Guatemala Slope Key Biodiversity Area

Partner: Fundaeco
Years: 2020-2022

Through this project, FUNDAECO will deploy a region-wide effort to ensure the protection of 16 endemic and threatened species of trees and palms in the Caribbean Guatemala Slope KBA. The project will support updated assessments of species, the design and implementation of conservation and restoration action plans, the in-situ protection of key sites and seed stands, and the implementation of urgent actions for the reproduction of key endemic and/or endangered trees species.

Guatemala is one of very few “Mega-Diverse” countries at the global level, but deforestation rates are still among the highest in Latin America. With scarce resources, conservation efforts have focused on forest cover maintenance, without addressing the severe erosion of tree biodiversity resulting from targeted logging of highly coveted tree species.
