Conservation of threatened tree species native to the Colombian Caribbean region

Strengthening the populations of threatened tree species in the Colombian Caribbean region through propagation and planting

Partner: Botanical Garden Foundation “Guillermo Piñeres” (JBGP)
Years: 2021-2023

This project aims to strengthen the populations of threatened tree species in the Colombian Caribbean region by mapping and identifying their current and potential distribution, threats, and locations. Furthermore, two new local nurseries to propagate threatened tree species will be established and one strengthened.

Pterocarpus acapulcensis (VU)

The project aims to strengthen the populations of at least seven of the thirteen targeted threatened tree species by propagating and reinforcing current populations with new individuals. Their current distribution, threats, and seed sources will be mapped. Two local tree nurseries will be established and one strengthened to propagate and plant 15,000 seedlings of the selected tree species while developing conservation action plans for at least seven target species.

Furthermore, practical courses on threatened tree species propagation, nursery management, and planting will be organized for local gardeners to build local capacity in tree conservation while simultaneously collecting phenology and natural regeneration data of the target species.
