Conservation of the endangered tree Parkia parvifoliola in Palau

Conservation of the endangered tree Parkia parvifoliola (Fabaceae) and assessment of Critically Endangered species in Palau

Partner: Belau National Museum
Years: 2021-2023

This project focuses on Parkia parvifoliola (EN) and two other globally threatened tree species, Timonius salsedoi (CR) and Ponapea palauensis (VU). All of which are endemic to the Republic of Palau, Micronesia. Their habitat is in decline due to development, fires, and invasive species.

This project focuses on three globally threatened tree species, Timonius salsedoi (CR), Parkia parvifoliola (EN), and Ponapea palauensis (VU), all of which are endemic to the Republic of Palau, Micronesia. All three have highly restricted ranges with only one known viable population each, and one, Timonius salsedoi, was last known from only two remaining trees and may now be extinct. Conservation actions are focused on Parkia parvifoliola for which its status is well known, and community awareness and conservation actions are already in progress. Ponapea is believed to be Critically Endangered but data indicating a population decline is needed to confirm this. Timonius is suspected to be extinct but discovery of seedlings and/or saplings may warrant urgent conservation actions for its survival.
