Conservation of Magnolia sulawesiana in Lore Lindu National Park, Indonesia
Partner: The Ethnobiological Society of Indonesia (PMEI)
Years: 2024-2027
Magnolia sulawesiana is Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to anthropogenic and natural regeneration factors. It requires both in situ and ex situ conservation efforts to prevent global extinction, and to meet people’s needs. Through this project, a total of 200 seedlings of M. sulawesiana will be planted in nature and community gardens.
The specific objectives of this project include researching spatial distribution, collecting propagules, developing propagation protocol, re-introducing M. sulawesiana, and conducting public awareness and capacity building. This project will be conducted for three years in the Lore Lindu National Park which is inhabited by four main ethnic groups: Kaili, Behoa, Bada, and Pekurehua. Their main livelihood activities are rice, farming, and cacao plantations. To ensure the project’s sustainability, the proponents have collaborated with three institutions: Lore Lindu National Park, Yayasan Tumbuhan Asli Indonesia, and Universitas Indonesia. In order to increase public awareness about M. sulawesiana and its propagation methods, the grantee team will disseminate their results through international publications, workshops, webinars, and press releases.
