Building capacity for conservation of threatened trees in Ghana

Building capacity for conservation of threatened trees in Ghana

Building capacity for long term conservation of threatened trees in Ghana

Partner: Tropical Biology Association (TBA)
Years: 2023-2024

The project aims to deliver a tailored practical programme of capacity development for in situ conservation and management of threatened tree species – and their habitats- in Ghana.

The project aims to deliver a tailored practical programme of capacity development for in situ conservation and management of threatened tree species – and their habitats- in Ghana. TBA will partner with key players in Ghana to deliver it. The long-term impact will be that threatened tree conservation is sustainable through successful management of habitats and restoration of species. This will directly contribute to the goals of the Conservation Action Plan (CAP) for Ghana’s threatened trees. TBA will deliver an integrated capacity development programme consisting of a practical training course and follow-up online support. The training will focus on the ecology that underpins successful in situ conservation of threatened tree species and restoration that looks beyond tree planting. It will include tools and skills for developing project plans with long-term measures of impact and training in communication to raise the profile of tree conservation at the national level. An outcome of the project will be a cohort of skilled conservation practitioners of threatened trees who can take a stronger lead in management and policy. They will also be equipped to train others in their own organisations, collaborating organisations, and local communities. Finally, the project will catalyse a national network of conservation practitioners – so that best practice is more easily shared and new collaborations forged.
