30 Jan Analyses of CITES tree proposals
The IUCN/TRAFFIC Analyses of the tree proposals to Amend the CITES Appendices
Partner: TRAFFIC International
Years: 2022
The main goal of this project is to produce an analysis of the tree proposals to amend the CITES Appendices, recognised to play a key role in regulating the trade in timber and other non-timber forest products.
IUCN and TRAFFIC have provided technical assistance to the Parties to CITES since 1987 by producing an analysis of the proposals to amend the CITES Appendices. To help ensure that adequate information is available, particularly for Parties that do not have the resources or capacity to analyse all proposals themselves, IUCN and TRAFFIC gather information on biology, status, trade and use, and measure this information against the requirements of the Convention. The resulting collation is published as the Analyses of the Proposals to Amend the CITES Appendices (“The Analyses”). Increasingly the Parties have recognised the key role that CITES can play in regulating the trade in timber and other non-timber forest products by submitting proposals to list tree species. In order to ensure that the species that require regulation and will benefit from listing, IUCN and TRAFFIC assess each proposal submitted and provide a comprehensive but comprehendible summary for the Parties. Given the economic importance of these resources it is vital that decision making is based on sound and objective evidence.
